ENCR Newsflash September 2026

Candidatures are open for the election of the ENCR Steering Committee for the 2027–2029 term. Staff of ENCR member cancer registries are invited to submit their candidature, with the required supporting documentation and endorsements, by 30 September 2026. Online voting will take place from 15 October to 30 November 2026.

The ECIS historical incidence and mortality data module has been updated with the latest contributions from population-based cancer registries submitted through the 2026 ECIS data call. The updated module enables users to explore cancer incidence and mortality patterns and trends by cancer entity, sex, age, calendar period and geographical area. We thank all contributing registries for their continued collaboration.

A new factsheet on lung cancer in EU‑27 and EFTA countries was published in the ECIS website, based on ECIS 2024 incidence and mortality estimates and observed historical data from cancer registries. The factsheet presents summary figures on lung cancer incidence, mortality, geographical variation and trends.

ENCR experts will deliver an online workshop on the new recommendations for recording recurrence, progression and transformation (RPT) episodes in population-based cancer registries. The programme will include an overview of CancerWatch survey results on current RPT practices, a detailed presentation of the ENCR recommendation, registry case studies from selected Cancer Registry, and practical exercises to support implementation in routine data collection.

ENCR experts will deliver an online training on the recommendation for recording cancer treatment in population-based cancer registries. The session will present results from the CancerWatch survey on current treatment recording practices, report on analyses of treatment data submitted to the ECIS database, and use specific examples to illustrate key coding rules and common challenges in routine registry work.

ENCR experts have prepared a draft recommendation on recording tumours of unknown primary site, now open for consultation with member registries. Building on work developed by FRANCIM and adapted for the European setting, it aims to support harmonised recording and reporting practices across cancer registries. Members are invited to review the draft and provide feedback during the consultation period.

The e-Learning modules aim to facilitate the training of cancer registrars in coding topography, morphology and cancer stage, implementing the relevant international classifications.

Version 2.3.16 of the JRC-ENCR Quality Check Software includes new univariate and multivariate checks for follow‑up and staging variables and a new summary output file. Cancer registries are encouraged to check regularly for the most up-to-date version on the ENCR website.
Complementary to the QCS, the CSV Data Structure Converter 1.3 is the additional tool developed (for Windows operating systems) to facilitate the preparation of incidence, mortality, population and life table files according to the latest ECIS call for data protocol.
